Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich said Friday the
club accepted the resignation of long-term team doctor Hans-Wilhelm
Mueller-Wohlfahrt "with regret" and that they would attempt to name a
replacement promptly.
Mueller-Wohlfahrt, 72, has had a connection with Bayern lasting
nearly four decades but announced departure of his staff and himself
after Tuesday's Champions League defeat in Porto, saying the medical
department had been unfairly blamed.
Doctor Volker Braun will support the team at games until a permanent
solution is found, Bayern said.
"Specifically Doctor Mueller-Wohlfahrt, but also his team, have in
recent years done an incredible job for the club and its players,"
Bayern said in a statement. "To this end, there is our express
thanks."
Mueller-Wohlfahrt is widely considered one of the best doctors in
sport. Along with working for Bayern, he is doctor to the German
national team and a host of stars, including sprint champion Usain
Bolt.
"For unexplained reasons, it was the medical department that was
chiefly blamed for the defeat," Mueller-Wohlfahrt said late Thursday,
adding "the relationship of trust has been permanently damaged."
Mueller-Wohlfahrt has had various disagreements with coach Pep
Guardiola as Bayern have suffered from a number of injuries which has
threatened their bid for a treble.
Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Bastian Schweinsteiger and David Alaba
all missed the Porto match while several others have been out for
long spells of the campaign.
Coach and doctor were also in dispute over the treatment of
midfielder Thiago following a knee injury which resulted in the
Spanish international breaking down with another injury and being
sidelined for over a year in total.
