 Serena Williams celebrates with the Butch Buchholz Championship Trophy Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-0 in less than an hour on Saturday to win an eighth title at the Miami Masters. Williams, who remains solidly in the WTA world number one position, has now won her last dozen finals. The last one she lost was in Cincinnati 2013 against Victoria Azarenka. The result was only marginally less dominating than when she beat the Spaniard love-love on Suarez Navarro's birthday two years ago at the US Open. Williams now owns 66 titles and become the fourth woman in the post-1968 Open era to win the same tournament eight times, joining Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Steffi Graf. Navratilova presented the trophy in a post-match ceremony Williams produced her fifth victory without a loss in the series with Suarez Navarro with ease, taking 56 minutes and lifting the trophy with 27 winners compared to three for her 12th-seeded Spanish opponent. Suarez Navarro had no answer throughout the rout, and was unable to make any impression or even mount a defence. Williams dedicated the victory to her father, Richard Williams. Suarez Navarro remains with just one career title, a small clay trophy from last spring in the discontinued Estoril tournament. The Spaniard will move into the ranking top 10 for the first time in her career on Monday. Williams has now won 18 straight matches in Miami. She repeated her own record of winning three straight Miami titles (2002-2004) with the only other woman to accomplish the feat being Graf (1994-1996). Suarez Navarro was the first Spanish woman to reach the final at Miami since Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario won the second of her two titles in 1993 over Graf. | |||||
